I am never one to follow trends, I always go by my gut. That’s not to say trends are a bad thing, I just think decorating with colours and things you love, you can’t go wrong. The thing with trends is that as soon as they are out of vogue interiors can look outdated and uncool very quickly.
You know what, not all trends look fab in every house, despite your best efforts. This doesn’t mean you have bad taste or that your house is old; it’s just that this part of your home is starting to look a little dated. So how do you avoid your home looking dated and old? Well, I better tell you how.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN STYLE
Knowing your interior style is crucial if you want to create a home you’ll love beyond the current season. Not all of us have huge budgets to spend on a fresh look every year, so think hard about what you really love and follow that – trust me, it works.

COLOUR
Interior Designers always say to pick a versatile colour for your base so you can accessorise with more affordable pieces. I totally agree with this, I would go for the darker end of the scale. Inky moody hues are instantly transformative, adding intrigue and drama to a space. You will never have to paint your room a different colour again, as dark colours are so seasonal you just need accessories to mix it up.

LAYERING
I cannot get enough of layering. I wrote a whole piece about it here – take a look – you’ll love it. Try placing the pieces you love in your space, a rug you bought from a Moroccan flea market or a chair you’ve inherited from an aunt – it will create a diverse space that keeps the eye moving.

ACCEPT CHANGE
Interiors is a fast-paced game now. Be ready to embrace a little change and don’t be afraid to mix things up. It can be simple things like changing your cushions or adding some new artwork turning your home from drab to fab.
